Welcome to Dark Sky Møn
Experience the darkness of the night and all the stars
The islands of Møn and Nyord are one of the few places in Denmark where the stars in the night sky can be seen. This has prompted a working group of local enthusiasts to pull on their work clothes and pursue international certification as a Dark Sky Park for Møn and Nyord.
Man has always been fascinated by the starry sky. It is seen in our culture and heard in our language. However, in the last 40-50 years, it has become increasingly difficult to see the starry sky because we use more and more outdoor lights at night. From all major cities in Denmark, it is no longer possible to see the brilliant Milky Way, like an arc of light across the starry sky.
There are still few places in Denmark where light spillage is minimal and the darkness of the night is close to natural. In these places, the night, the Milky Way and the starry sky unfold in such splendor that it cannot be described in words or pictures, but must be experienced with your own senses, in a total experience of the night. The islands of Møn and Nyord are one of these few places.
“The quality of the night sky over Møn and Nyord is exceptionally good by Danish standards. The Milky Way, for example, is so large and clear that it surprises even experienced amateur astronomers,” says Tom Axelsen, Chairman of the Astronomical Society for South Zealand.
The light pollution map below shows where we emit the most light at night. Is that where you live?
